Slack AI Integration

Answer team questions in Slack and index channel history as a knowledge source

What is it?

About Slack

Slack is the team messaging platform used by millions of companies for real-time collaboration. BeforeQuery integrates with Slack in two complementary ways: as a bot that answers questions directly in Slack with grounded replies from your knowledge base, and as an ingestion source that indexes your Slack channel history — turning past conversations, decisions, and discussions into searchable, source-backed knowledge.

Integration capabilities

How BeforeQuery works with Slack

Everything you can do once the Slack integration is connected.

Channel and DM answering

Invite the BeforeQuery bot to any Slack channel. Users ask questions with /askai or by @mentioning the bot. The bot replies in-thread to keep channels clean.

Channel history ingestion

Index message history from any public or private Slack channel BeforeQuery is invited to. Past decisions, resolved questions, and team discussions become source-backed knowledge — so the bot answers future questions using your own Slack history.

Multi-knowledge-base support

Configure the bot to query different BeforeQuery knowledge bases for different channels — your support channel queries the public docs, internal channels query private knowledge bases and indexed channel history.

Confidence-gated fallback

When the bot is not confident in an answer, it says so and suggests contacting a human — preventing misleading replies from reaching your team.

Setup

How to connect Slack

  1. Step 01

In the BeforeQuery dashboard, go to Integrations > Slack and click Install. Authorize the app in your Slack workspace.

  2. Step 02

Invite the bot to any channel with /invite @BeforeQuery. Configure which BeforeQuery knowledge base it queries in the dashboard.

  3. Step 03

To index channel history as a knowledge source, add a Slack source in your knowledge base, select the channels to index, and run the first sync. BeforeQuery ingests message history and keeps it up to date automatically.

Slack — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about connecting BeforeQuery to Slack.

From the BeforeQuery dashboard, go to Integrations > Slack and click Install. You will be redirected to authorize the app in your Slack workspace. After authorization, invite the bot to channels with /invite @BeforeQuery and configure which BeforeQuery knowledge base it queries.
Yes. Add a Slack source in your BeforeQuery knowledge base and select the channels to index. BeforeQuery ingests message history, normalizes thread conversations into structured documents, and keeps the index up to date as new messages are posted. The bot can then answer questions using your channel history as a knowledge source.
Yes. You can map each Slack channel to a specific BeforeQuery knowledge base. For example, your #support channel can query the public documentation knowledge base while #engineering queries your internal runbooks and ADRs knowledge base.
BeforeQuery verifies all incoming Slack events using Slack's HMAC-based request signing (X-Slack-Signature). Only verified requests from your Slack workspace trigger a bot response — unauthorized requests are rejected.
When the retrieval confidence score is below your configured threshold, the bot replies with a message indicating it does not have a high-confidence answer and suggests contacting a team member or support. This prevents misleading replies from being sent to your team.
